In Biblical language, blood is not just something physical, but an expression of the very life that God has given. That is why it says: «For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls. It is the blood that makes atonement because the life is in it» (Leviticus 17:11). When blood is given – life is given, and understanding this is important to understand why the blood of Jesus is so central to the Christian message.
The Bible is clear that sin is not just a single mistake we make, but a condition that separates us from God. «The wages of sin is death» (Romans 6:23). This means that sin leads to spiritual death and broken fellowship with God. God is holy and righteous, and sin cannot simply be ignored.
In the Old Testament, God had His people sacrifice animals, but these sacrifices could never completely take away sin. They were temporary and pointed forward to something greater. The book of Hebrews plainly states that the blood of animals could not take away sin (Hebrews 10:4). The sacrificial system was a teaching—a preparation—for what was to come.
What makes Jesus« blood so special is who Jesus is. He was without sin, and He lived a perfect life of obedience to God. That is why He could be a sacrifice in our place. The Bible says, »For you know that it was not with perishable things like silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish or spot« (1 Peter 1:18–19). John the Baptist called Him »the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
The shedding of Jesus« blood was necessary because »almost all things are purified with blood by the law, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness« (Hebrews 9:22). But the great message of the gospel is that »God demonstrates his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). On the cross, Jesus took the punishment that was truly ours.
The Bible says that the blood of Jesus gives us forgiveness: «In him we have freedom, the forgiveness of sins, through his blood» (Ephesians 1:7). It makes us righteous before God: «Therefore having been justified by the blood of Christ...» (Romans 5:9) and it gives us peace with God: «..through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of his cross» (Colossians 1:20).
«If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin» (1 John 1:7). Many carry guilt, shame, and heavy thoughts, but the blood of Jesus speaks louder than all of these. When we come to God and confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from the inside out (1 John 1:9). This forgiveness is not based on how strongly we feel it, but on what Jesus has actually done.
The blood of Jesus also gives us boldness to come to God without fear. The Bible says, «Therefore, brothers and sisters, having boldness to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus» (Hebrews 10:19). We can therefore come to God just as we are, because the way has already been opened by Jesus.
When the Bible speaks of the power of the blood of Jesus, it is about the power of what Jesus has accomplished, and we share in this victory: «They have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb.”
and by the word of their testimony...» (Revelation 12:11). When we face opposition or inner struggle, we can remind ourselves of the truth that Jesus has paid for our sin, and when our conscience accuses us, we can turn our eyes to the cross. «There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus» (Romans 8:1).
The Bible says that Jesus took our place completely and completely. «…the chastisement of our peace was upon him» (Isaiah 53:5). He bore our guilt so that we could have freedom. «And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and was raised» (2 Corinthians 5:15).
The blood of Jesus tells us that God took sin seriously – and that He took man even more seriously. Therefore, with humble hearts, we can trust Him as Savior, hold on to His grace, and live in the new life He has given us.
